New Puppy? What To Do First

Congratulations on the new addition to your family! All of our veterinarians and staff at Sheehy Animal Hospital in Livonia are looking forward to meeting your furry friend and starting a lasting relationship with him. But before you come in, are you ready for your new puppy?

Preparing Your Home for Safe Pet Care

It is best to buy all necessities, like toys, food, bowls, and leashes, before your furry friend comes home for the first time. Buy him a crate where he can feel safe and warm and remove all items from your house that are dangerous to your pet if ingested, such as poisonous plants and chemicals. Make sure you have a collar and leash that are sized appropriately for your puppy. Purchase a supply of puppy food and treats for training. Ensure you have a space that is completely puppy-proofed where he can stay while you are out running errands.

Make an Appointment with Your Veterinarian

Whether your puppy came from a shelter or a reputable breeder, bring him to our veterinary clinic as soon as possible for a wellness checkup. Your new furry friend will be checked for common problems like worms and fleas while we get a file started for him. We will also go over the benefits of microchipping, spaying or neutering, and vaccinating your pet. During this time, feel free to ask our veterinarian about training and feeding tips and what to expect as your puppy grows.
