Our Livonia Veterinarian Gives Tips on Safe Travel with Exotic Pets

At Sheehy Animal Hospital we frequently get asked “How should I transport my exotic pet when I come to the vet?”

We would like to give you a few pointers on safely traveling with your favorite pet; be it to our animal hospital in Livonia or anywhere else, we want you to be in the know!

There Are Different Ways to Transport Different Animals Warns Our Veterinarian in Livonia

Cat carriers work well for a variety of pets including rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, and chinchillas.

Birds should be transported in a sturdy carrier. Small birds can be transported in a cage or box (with holes punched in it). Cat carriers can work well for smaller birds but very large parrots can chew through them quickly. Their behavior should be monitored to ensure they do not make a hole large enough to escape.

Birds should never be brought into the hospital on your shoulder or inside your clothing. Flying off your shoulder could result in your pet flying into a dog or cat or even into the parking lot where it can lost.  In cold weather you should always preheat your car and wrap the cage or box with a blanket to prevent drafts.

Some small rodents like gerbils or rats can chew through a cardboard carrier quickly, so always watch them closely while traveling.

Chinchillas and guinea pigs do not do well in excessive heat. Always run the air conditioner before bringing them into the car on hot summer days. This can help prevent heat stroke.

Most reptiles are used to warm climates and do not do well with rapid temperature changes. When it is cold outside it is best to transport your reptile in a smaller box nested inside a larger box. Between the inner and outer box bottles of warm water can be placed to help maintain their temperature.

When traveling with your favorite exotic pet the cage or box should always be secure so that it cannot be thrown off the seat if you suddenly stop your car. Our veterinarian in Livonia recommends that a seat belt can be helpful to keep them safe and in place while driving.
