How to Prepare For Your First Road Trip With Your Pet

How to Prepare for Your First Road Trip with Your Pet

With spring fast approaching, you may be considering a road trip with your canine companion. If this is a first for your furry friend, these pets travel tips from Sheehy Animal Hospital can help you prepare for your adventure.

Check in with Your Vet

Inform our Livonia veterinarian of your travel plans so we can update your pet’s vaccinations, if necessary, or provide you with extra medications your pup may need for your travels. Our vet may even have pets travel tips to share that will make your trip a more pleasant experience.

Plan Your Route

Plan a route that that allows for easy bathroom and exercise breaks for your canine. Factor in 15 minute to half hour breaks every 3-4 hours during your trip to give your pet time to relieve himself and exercise. Schedule your trip around good weather so you’re not stuck in a rain or windstorm along the way.

Book Pet-friendly Accommodations

Book pet-friendly accommodations in advance to ensure you have a place to stay when you stop for the night.

Pack a “Doggie” Bag

Pack a separate bag for your dog with items that will facilitate his travels and make pet road trips a more pleasant experience. This could include his food and treats, food and water bowls, a leash, chew toys, his towel and blanket, grooming products, poop bag, a brush, and flea protectant.

Crate Your Canine for Traveling

For safety’s sake, yours and your pet’s, consider crating him during your travels. This can help prevent accidents. By giving your pet plenty of exercise during breaks, he should be tired enough to rest in a crate while you’re driving.

Pet road trips provide an opportunity for you and your pet to bond and grow closer together as a family. If your pet is due for a wellness exam, schedule his checkup at Sheehy Animal Hospital before hitting the road to ensure he’s in good enough health for traveling.
